THE NUMBER ONES
(Deranged Records/ Static Shock Records)
The Number Ones will take you to power pop heaven with their razor sharp 10 track self titled debut album soon to be released on Deranged Records in the US of A, and Static Shock Records in Europe.
Comprised of Conor Lumsden on the drums, Cian Nugent on bass, Eddie Kenrick on guitar and Seán Goucher also on guitar, The #1s are a band from Dublin featuring members of Cian Nugent & The Cosmos (Matador/No Quarter), Cheap Freaks (Big Neck), Strong Boys (Milk Run), and The Pacifics (Bachelor).
Con, Eddie and Cian are old friends and have only been best friends with Seán for a couple years. Conor moved to London for a bit to spread his wings but now the boy is back in town and the band are fighting stronger than ever. The group are big fans of having fun and hanging out with friends eating chips or having something to drink.
Even though they are based in Dublin, they sound like a classic Good Vibrations band from 1979. The Number Ones have energy, passion and tunes so good, it makes you think you’ve heard them already. Each track is a golden nugget of power pop fun that never outlasts it’s welcome as every track is under three minutes. Although this sort of music seems to have been done a million times before, it sounds fresh in the hands of The Number Ones.
This is pure summer fun for fans of Rudi, Protex, Exploding Hearts, Buzzcocks and The Tranzmitors.
The #1s claims to like “both kinds of music, Beatles and Punk”, so its no surprise that Ad Hoc says their songs are “brimming with enough enthusiasm to keep you awake for hours” and MRR says its “top-not Dublin power-pop from a bunch of young whippersnappers.”
Their self titled album was recorded at a friend’s rehearsal space, and finished off with an overnight session in hell. The #1s are currently planning to play every town in Ireland before getting banned from England in the Summer and North America in Autumn.
So Cow are an Irish indie rock band, currently signed with Goner Records. Started as a solo act in 2005 in Seoul, South Korea by Brian Kelly, the group has since evolved into a three piece band with Jonny White on Bass and Peter O’Shea on Drums. They have released four albums; These Truly Are End Times (2007), I’m Siding With my Captors (2008), So Cow (2009) & Meaningless Friendly (2010), as well as numerous singles and a Split album. Their fifth album The Long Con will be released by Goner records in 2014. They have appeared at Primavera Sound, SXSW, HWCH & Castlepalooza.
Their sound has been described by Pitchfork as “Like Television Personalities or The Clean at their most engaging, Kelly plays rickety guitar-pop that sounds homemade without feeling insular.”
